Families
Families are well catered for in laid-back Austria, we've picked out 3 of our favourites for a family ski break: Hinterglemm has a super modern lift infrastructure & the local slopes are mild, perfect for teaching the kids. Obergurgl has the majority of its slopes over 2,000m giving serious snowsure credentials. The area is cruisy bluesy making it a solid choice for a half-term. Finally St Johan, with rolling hills aplenty is built for families. Plus you can hop on the train from the resort which takes you to Kitzbuhel in 8 minutes (stops beside the gondola) Winner!
Groups
Whilst you can still find some chalets and apartments in Austria, for groups it's hotels and chalet hotels that can really make the difference. Hotels make up most of the accommodation options in Austria and give you central acceess to some of the best skiing, apres ski and spas around. St Anton, Mayrhofen or Ischgl are the lively spots. Lech and Obergurgl are a little more upmarket. Right on the lake, Zell am See is simply stunning and with Kaprun and Bad Hofgastein giving serious wellness vibes, you should be able to plan a pretty epic group ski trip in Austria.
Snowboarders
Austria's slopes have some serious snowboard credentials. The likes of Absinth Films and Go Pro use Lech for untouched backcountry bowls and epic descents, while Ischgl has the world-renowned PlayStation Vita Snowpark, a playground for pushing your limits. Mayrhofen's Vans Penken Park attracts legendary riders like Jenny Jones, and its iconic rainbow box jump can make you an overnight local. Whether you crave challenging powder or perfectly sculpted rails, Austria's diverse resorts guarantee an unforgettable shredding experience.
Après-ski
Austria is all about the straight off the slopes apres ski. From traditional games like nails (hammering a nail into a log to decide who buys the next round) to the multistorey tray wielding 100 stein waiters at the Mooserwirt in St Anton where lederhosen are a staple and the sunset vibe is rather unique. But whilst the drinks are flowing, there's also a quieter side with spas and wellness in general a huge focus, the Tauern Spa in Kaprun could be the cherry on the wellness cake, the iconic infinity pool is just the beginning.
Non-skiers
in a word, Spas. Austria has entire resorts built around thermal waters and the sauna is practically a national hobby. Sweat it off in the sauna and plunge into icy pools, you have herbal scented steam rooms and people whose job it is to fan you in the hottest saunas going. And the best bit, it's almost guaranteed to come with a mountain view. The Arlberg Well in St Anton has a lazy river style open-air pool whilst the Tauern Spa in Kaprun is the perfect Instagram shot. To the Spa gardens and healing caves of Bad Hofgastein. Austria has you sparred out.
Luxury
There's something quite humble about Austrian skiing but there's definitely a luxurious side to it as well. From the slopeside champagne bar in Zurs to the Jazz lounges and late night wine lists in Lech - a serious foodie hot spot with more Michelin Stars and Gaut Millau points than a Dalmatian has spots. Ishgl is dripping gin designer shops and fancy hotels whilst Kitzbuhel oozes in history, the once coach Inns now luxury spots with rooftop pools and Crayola bright facades.
