The History of Vaujany
Before becoming a ski resort, Vaujany was a small, traditional mountain farming village in the Oisans region of the French Alps. For centuries, life revolved around agriculture, livestock, and seasonal migration, with residents relying on hardy crops and cattle suited to the harsh alpine climate. The village was relatively isolated, and like many alpine communities, it experienced population decline in the 19th and early 20th centuries. A major turning point came in the 1980s with the construction of the Grand’Maison hydroelectric dam, which brought significant financial compensation and investment to the commune. Rather than fading, the village used this revenue to modernize infrastructure and develop tourism. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Vaujany built lifts and a large cable car linking it directly to the Alpe d’Huez Grand Domaine, transforming it into a fully connected ski resort. Today, Vaujany combines modern ski facilities, direct access to one of France’s largest ski areas, and the preserved character of a traditional alpine village.
